Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha is one of the most powerful and spiritually uplifting stories from Hindu tradition. Devotees observe Sawan Somwar Vrat every Monday during the holy month of Shravan to seek blessings from Lord Shiva. This sacred story highlights how strong devotion and unwavering faith can even alter destiny.
In ancient times, a rich merchant lived with his wife in a large town. Despite having all comforts, they were deeply unhappy because they had no children. Hoping for a divine miracle, the merchant began observing the Sawan Somwar fast with full devotion. Every Monday, he offered oil lamps at Lord Shiva’s temple and prayed sincerely.
Goddess Parvati, moved by the merchant’s dedication, asked Lord Shiva why his prayers hadn’t been answered. Shiva explained that the merchant’s past karmas did not allow him to have a child. However, upon Parvati’s request and the devotee’s faith, Lord Shiva appeared in the merchant’s dream. He blessed him with a son but warned—the child would live only for 14 years.
Soon, the merchant’s son Amar was born. As Amar grew older, his father sent him to Kashi (Varanasi) for education. During the journey, Amar stayed in a town where a royal wedding was taking place. The groom had gone missing, so Amar was asked to take his place temporarily. Later, when the real groom arrived, the bride refused to marry anyone other than Amar, whom she had already accepted as her husband.
Amar reached Kashi and continued his studies. But as he turned 14, he fell seriously ill and passed away—just as Lord Shiva had foretold. His uncle, who was with him, was devastated and performed his last rites.
At that moment, Lord Shiva and Parvati happened to pass by. Parvati, once again moved by compassion, pleaded with Lord Shiva to save Amar. Honouring her request and the merchant’s devotion during Sawan Somwar Vrats, Shiva brought Amar back to life.
Amar returned home safely and was welcomed by his wife and family. The merchant was overjoyed, and his faith in Lord Shiva deepened even more. This Shravan Somwar Vrat Katha teaches that sincere devotion and fasting during Sawan Mondays can earn Lord Shiva’s divine grace—even rewriting one’s fate. It also shows how karma, faith, and compassion come together in divine balance.
