Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), January 20: While millions gather at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj for the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, a unique figure among the Naga sadhus has become the talk of the town. Known as "Ambassador Baba," Rajgiri from Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district has captured the attention of devotees and visitors alike with his vintage 1973 Ambassador car. Painted in saffron and still in pristine working condition, this car is much more than a vehicle—it’s a reflection of Baba’s personality and spiritual journey.
Ambassador Baba’s bond with his car spans over 35 years, during which the vehicle has been his constant travel companion. Remarkably, he drives the car himself wherever he goes, making it an integral part of his spiritual presence at gatherings. The car is no mere relic—it is fully functional and customised to suit his needs.
To combat the heat, Baba has creatively installed an exhaust fan on the roof and uses ice blocks with a battery-powered setup as a makeshift air conditioner. This ingenuity ensures that the car remains both practical and comfortable during long journeys. Baba takes pride in his mechanical skills, confidently stating, “If the car breaks down, I repair it myself.”
A Life of Spiritual Devotion
Rajgiri’s spiritual journey began at the tender age of seven. By the time he was 15, he had fully dedicated himself to meditation and penance, following the guidance of his guru. Renouncing worldly ties, Baba embraced the path of self-discipline. True to the traditions of ancient ascetics, he meditates year-round without clothing, regardless of harsh weather conditions.
The Spiritual Significance of Kumbh
For Ambassador Baba, participating in the Maha Kumbh Mela is more than just a ritual—it is a deeply spiritual experience. He expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to perform the Amrit Snan (holy bath) at the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.
After the Mahakumbh, Baba plans to retreat to the solitude of forests and caves to continue his meditation and penance. He views the Kumbh as an essential spiritual milestone that aligns with his ascetic lifestyle.
While Baba is approachable and willing to discuss his penance and spiritual practices, he admitted to being irritated by trivial or frivolous questions. “If someone asks about my penance, I am happy to explain. But pointless queries irritate me,” he remarked.
As the Maha Kumbh Mela continues, Ambassador Baba and his saffron-colored car have become a symbol of both devotion and individuality, drawing countless visitors eager to catch a glimpse of this unique sadhu and his beloved vehicle.
