Sant Kabir Das, one of India’s most revered spiritual saints, attained Nirvana on Magh Shukla Ekadashi in January 1518. In 2025, Kabirdas Nirvan Diwas falls on February 8, as per the Hindu calendar. On this day, followers across India and beyond honor his teachings, reflecting on his life’s message of unity, devotion, and spiritual liberation.

Why Did Kabir Choose Maghar Over Kashi?

According to Hindu beliefs, Kashi (Varanasi) is considered the holiest place to die, as it is believed that those who breathe their last in Kashi attain Moksha (liberation). In contrast, Maghar, a small town in Uttar Pradesh, was believed to be cursed—people thought that anyone who dies there is reborn as a donkey in their next life.

But Sant Kabir, the fearless reformer, rejected this superstition. To prove that salvation is not bound by location but by one’s spiritual state, he chose Maghar over Kashi as the place of his Nirvana. Through this bold act, he shattered age-old myths and taught that liberation is achieved through devotion and righteous living, not by dying in a particular place.

A Samadhi and a Mazaar - Unique Legacy of Sant Kabirdas

Sant Kabir Das was loved by both Hindus and Muslims. Upon his death, both communities wanted to perform his last rites. A popular legend states that when they lifted the shroud covering his body, they found only fragrant flowers instead of his mortal remains. As a result, Hindus built a Samadhi (memorial), while Muslims constructed a Mazaar (tomb)—both standing side by side in Maghar

Sant Kabir’s teachings revolved around oneness, devotion, and social equality, making him one of the most profound spiritual reformers of India. He rejected religious orthodoxy, caste-based discrimination, and blind rituals, emphasizing that true devotion lies in inner purity and self-realization rather than external practices. His Nirguna Bhakti philosophy preached the worship of a formless divine, transcending religious boundaries. Through his Dohas (couplets), he imparted wisdom on love, humility, and detachment from material illusions, urging people to seek truth and righteousness over superstition and dogma.
