Former US president Donald Trump secured a second term in office on November 6, defeating Kamala Harris in what many believed would be a nail-biter. Trump swept the nation, likely winning 312 electoral votes and regaining ground in the swing states of Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Arizona, which he lost to President Joe Biden in 2020.

Trump’s triumph also marks a significant personal milestone, as he won the popular vote for the first time in three election cycles. As of 4 pm on November 6, Trump led the polls with a 51 percent vote share.

A Moneycontrol analysis shows that this is the largest vote share secured by a Republican nominee in 36 years. George W. Bush Sr. won the 1988 election, securing a 53.4 percent vote share. His son, former president George HW Bush, won 50.7 percent votes in 2004, in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and the Afghanistan war.

Not only did Trump widen his victory margin, but a Moneycontrol analysis of data from AP’s Poll also showed that his victory was more representative of the nation than before.

Trump, now the oldest President-elect in US history, has won 46 percent vote share among the youth (18-29), a significant jump from his previous 36 percent.

His support among the 30-44-year-olds also increased to 47 percent from 43 percent in 2020, with gains among both men and women.

Trump’s representation among young men in the 18-44 category rose from 45 percent to 52 percent, while female support increased to 43 percent from 37 percent in 2020.

His vote share among the African American voters doubled to 15 percent from 8 percent, while he secured 41 percent of the Latino vote from 35 percent four years earlier.

The only places where Trump did not make gains were among college-educated and suburban women, in a poll where issues like abortion were also on the poll. He also gained among urban and rural voters.
