Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen create the Soft Seating, a series of flexible seating from paper.

The desire for flexible, sustainable and spontaneous space making inspired architects Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen of Vancouver-based Molo Design to create Soft Seating. After experimenting with small models of folded paper, the architects explored possibilities of flexible walls and furniture that could simply fold away when not needed, or be shaped into unique designs according to personal desire. Thus was born Soft Seating — a collection of seating/table elements, with one version made entirely from brown craft paper (comprising 50 per cent recycled cardboard boxes and 50 per cent new long fiber), and the other from a non-woven polyethylene fibre textile (in white or stained hues) with a bamboo charcoal ink. The honeycomb geometry coupled with the grain direction of the paper, gave this seemingly delicate material incredible strength. Each element of Soft Seating was fitted with magnetic end panels, allowing the element to connect to itself, forming a cylindrical stool or low table; or to connect to other elements in the series, creating long winding benches. Apart from Soft Seating, the studio has also created Softwall and Softblock with similar material and structural compositions.
