Former United States President Donald Trump has softened his stance on immigration by promising automatic green cards to foreign students graduating from colleges in the US, aiming to prevent them from returning to their home countries like India and China, where they often become multi-billionaires. This shows a notable shift from his earlier stance as he seeks support ahead of the upcoming US presidential election where immigration is a key issue for voters.
Despite his previous hardline stance, Trump has consistently supported a merit-based immigration system. In a recent podcast, Trump said, "What I want to do and what I will do is --you graduate from a college, I think you should get a Green Card automatically as part of your diploma, a Green Card to be able to stay in this country. And that includes junior colleges too."
A green card, or permanent resident card, grants permanent residency in the US.
The podcast, hosted by capitalists Chamath Palihapitiya, Jason Calacanis, David Sacks, and David Friedberg, featured Trump responding to Calacanis's request for a commitment to allow more top global talent to stay in the US.
