"Heavy rain is likely to occur in the next 24 hours at certain places in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Theni, and Dindigul districts. Heavy rain is also likely in certain places in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Tiruppur, and Ramanathapuram districts," he said.

This action comes as part of Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) — the Centre's air pollution control plan that is implemented in the region during the winter season.

A division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Arif Doctor made this observation in its order while taking suo motu cognisance of the air pollution in Mumbai.

Asking the principal secretary of the forest department to fill the vacancies on a "war footing", the court said, "You are responsible for quality of air we breathe. It is your obligation to ensure AQI comes down."

The government would urgently seek necessary assistance from the Centre even as the Relief and Rehabilitation Department has been directed to quickly decide on the appropriate relief for the affected areas.
