North India is facing a grim situation in terms of Monsoon rain. The region is observing an unprecedented spell of dry weather for almost ten days. More alarming is the fact that Punjab, Haryana and Delhi are observing 100% rainfall deficit on a daily basis. Even the hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are facing similar weather conditions.
Temperatures have been on a rising spree across the region. Delhi has already been experiencing record breaking temperatures since the last couple of days. The Palam Observatory recorded 39.6 degrees Celsius as the maximum on Friday, which is the second highest temperature observed in Delhi in the last ten years. Just a day before, on Wednesday the temperature had settle at 39.5 degrees Celsius. The highest in the month of August in a decade has been 40.1degrees Celsius, recorded on 11th August, 2009. The city has not observed a drop of rain in almost two weeks, making it the longest spell of dry weather in August. The previous record was of ten days in 2005.
The conditions are similar in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan as well. Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan recorded 36.8 degrees Celsius as the maximum temperature on Friday, while Siker saw the maximum settle at 38.6 degrees Celsius, which is 5 degrees above normal. Amritsar, Patiala and Chandigarh in Punjab are observing temperatures 2-4 degrees above normal at 37 degrees Celsius, 36.6 degrees Celsius and 37 degrees Celsius respectively.
Hisar in Haryana has also been observing maximums settle at 40 degrees Celsius, 4 degrees above normal for two consecutive days, on Thursday and Friday. Bhiwani and Rohtak too have been seeing maximums settle 4-5 degrees above normal at 39.4 degrees Celsius and 39 degrees Celsius respectively.
As a division the Northwest region is facing a rainfall deficit of above 90% for the last couple of days, which does not look like making good improvement. However, we can expect some weather activity on the 28th or the 29th of August
