Legendary American investor Warren Buffett, who is preparing to pass the Berkshire Hathaway CEO seat to his hand-selected successor Greg Abel, was famously frugal.
In fact, the 94-year-old has been living in the same home in central Omaha for an astonishing 67 years. He had bought the five-bedroom for $31,500 in 1958, which is about $329,505 in today’s dollars and about Rs 2.8 crore as per today's forex conversion rate. The house is currently valued at about $1.2 million, according to Zillow, and is equivalent to a little more than Rs 10 crore. Despite the significant increase in its value, the house is still quite modest for Buffett, the world’s sixth-richest person.
"He’s authentic," CNBC's veteran journalist Becky Quick said. She was his frequent interviewer and had a long-standing relationship with Buffett. "Warren Buffett’s authenticity really runs through because he lives what he says."
Buffett himself has consistently championed the merits of homeownership, even declaring his Omaha residence the third-best investment he ever made in a 2010 letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. His top two? Wedding rings, a sentiment reflecting his personal values alongside his financial acumen.
Located on a corner lot in Omaha, a mere five-minute drive from Berkshire Hathaway's corporate headquarters, the 6,570-square-foot house was originally built in 1921 with a stucco exterior and subsequent additions, CNBC reported.
His immense wealth did not make Buffett trade his long-time residence for a more extravagant one . "I’m happy there. I’d move if I thought I’d be happier someplace else," he told the BBC in a 2009 interview for "The World’s Greatest Moneymaker."
According to him, the Omaha home provides all the comfort and convenience he needs. "I’m warm in the winter, I’m cool in the summer, it’s convenient for me," he explained in the same interview. "I couldn’t imagine having a better house."
