“I don’t want the job of fixing this—but someone has to do it,” Warren Buffett on DOGE

Highlighting current fiscal challenges, he said, “Right now, we have about a 7% fiscal gap, when probably only 3% is sustainable. The further we stray from sustainability, the closer we get to losing control.”

When it comes to the net benefit of DOGE - Department of Government Efficiency, Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett termed it as a job he doesn't want but a job that needed to be done. He was answering a query as a part of Berkshire Hathaway's Annual General Meeting. While he did not directly mention DOGE, he added the bureaucracy is incredibly prevalent, even in our capitalist system. "It’s almost contagious, and you see it in the corporate world too, a lot of organisations could clearly be run better," he said.

Buffett added, “What worries me about the future of currency—especially with something like Doge—is that it intersects with political promises." He added that politicians often make commitments to give people things, and while they may be sincere, there’s a disconnect between political incentives and economic sustainability.

The veteran investor noted that the government has never fully solved these issues, and in a democracy, changing things is hard. "We're operating in a very unique environment—there's never been a country quite like the United States," he added.

Calling the current economic direction “unsustainable,” Buffett added that the country is heading toward a tipping point. “We’re doing things that are unsustainable, and eventually, that becomes uncontrollable. You risk reaching a point where the system just breaks down.”
