A US-based content creator living in India was left stunned after his auto driver began speaking to him in fluent French during a casual ride. The vlogger, Jay, shared the light-hearted exchange on Instagram, where the clip quickly went viral, crossing 1.5 million views.

The video shows Jay chatting with the driver, who suddenly asked, “How many languages do you speak?” Jay replied, “I speak two languages, French and English.” Without missing a beat, the driver switched to French and asked, “Do you speak French?”

Caught off guard, Jay struggled to keep up with the fluent question, prompting the driver to repeat it in simpler French. Jay laughed throughout the exchange, visibly astonished by the unexpected turn of events. The post was captioned, “When your driver speaks French in India.”

Online commentators amused

The video drew amused reactions from Instagram users. Rohan Rafael (@aka_gigachad25) commented, “It took him five seconds to download the language.” Danveer Saini (@ofc_dxxnxxrr) added, “Bro scanned him and activate the language.” Ankita Gupta (@ftw.gamer_____) joked, “Bro connected VPN.”

Foreigners continue to challenge stereotypes about India

The conversation originally took place on YouTube and was later shared on Instagram by Nigerian content creator Pascal Olaleye, who moved to India three years ago and now runs a business with friends. Posting the clip under the caption “She left France for India… here’s why”, Olaleye highlighted the woman’s reflections on life in India.

During their exchange, the French teacher said she was currently based in Rajkot, Gujarat. While she expressed fondness for India, she clarified she did not plan to stay permanently, explaining she did not wish to be “bound by geography” and intended to relocate again in future.

Asked about common misconceptions foreigners hold about India, she said many people in France assume the country is unsafe — a view she strongly disagreed with.

Olaleye pressed further: “Are you saying France is not as safe as India? India is safer than France?”
She responded simply: “Yes.”
