While long trips spanning days at a time are always exciting, they are not cost-effective or practical. Squeezing in a weekend trip can be a wonderful way to reset and rejuvenate. These destinations don’t need a plane ticket, but just a few hours drive from your city.

What more, there are 15 long weekends in 2024, mark these dates on your calendar:

December 30-January 1: New Year’s weekend

January 13-15: Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal

January 26-28: Republic Day weekend

March 8-10: Mahashivratri weekend

March 23-25: Holi weekend

March 29-31: Good Friday to Easter

If you’re looking for a destination that will take you out of your comfort zone and into the heart of nature and history then consider Mandu in Madhya Pradesh. The imposing Jahaz Mahal a harem built by Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji for his 1,5000 maidens, Roopmati Pavilion, Hindola Mahal angled at 77 degrees and Hoshang Shah’s Tomb are some of the noteworthy monuments to visit. You can go fishing in the Malipura lake and bring the fresh catch to the villagers for a meal or go horse riding. But the best way to truly relish Mandu is to sit on the riverbanks watch the world go by.

2. Kochi, Kerala

Are you a patron of the arts then this enchanting place is sure to get your creative juices flowing. Though art and historical sites are the biggest draws for most visitors, this port city has enough magic for everyone. Take a leisurely walk along Fort Kochi and drop by at the Saint Francis Church the burial site of explorer Vasco de Gama. Don’t miss the gorgeous Athirapilly waterfalls that has guest-starred in numerous Bollywood movies. In the evening witness the Chinese fishing nets silhouetted against the setting sun. Bargain for the catch of the day, fresh from the boat and have it fried to perfection at one of the nearby stalls.

3. Sindhudurg, Maharashtra

This seaside town has some fabulous sea forts, a thriving water sports scene and great seafood. The major attraction here is the imposing Sindhudurg fort flanked by the Western Ghats on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other. On a clear day, one can see the sea-bed up to a depth of almost 20 feet. Scuba diving and snorkeling in these waters is a treat. Curl up with a book on the pristine beaches that line up on the Konkan coastline - Tarkarli, Shiroda, Bhogwe, Kunkeshwar, Mochemad, Achra, Vayangani and Redi. When hunger strikes walk across to Atithi Bamboo for a delicious seafood meal. Spend the evening amidst the old fort ruins of Niviti overlooking the Arabian Sea and wander down the coast.

4. Rann Utsav,  Kutch, Gujarat

From witnessing stunning sunset on a hypnotic salt desert, to watching pink flamingos frolic in blue waters, camel rides, shopping and mouth-watering  cuisine, Rann Utsav in Kutch is simply an unforgettable getaway. Make the Tent City your base and take a day trip to the Harappan site of  Dholavira. Kalo Dungar (black hill in Gujarati) perched at the edge of Kutch comes with jaw dropping views of the Rann and the Indo-Pak border. Beach lovers can also make a trip to Mandvi to enjoy the serene coastline and visit the splendid Jay Vilas Palace where Bollywood blockbuster Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was shot.

Pro Tip: The Rann looks best on a full moon night. Time your visit for 23-24-25 February 2024.

5. Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

Just a four hours train journey from Delhi will land you in Orchha a 16th century town resting royally on the banks of river Betwa in Madhya Pradesh. Wake up early and go rafting on the Betwa river followed by a visit to Laxmi Narayan Temple, Orchha fort complex, Jahangir Mahal and Phool Bagh. End the day with a dazzling light and sound show detailing the magnificent history of Orchha at Orchha Fort.

6. Pondicherry

If you love to laze around and relax on the beach, Pondicherry is a perfect weekend escape. This tiny coastal city boasts some beautiful and untouched beaches and promenades. The best way to explore Pondy is through a guided tour on a bicycle. Head to Paradise beach for some spectacular boating and stunning sunsets. Nature lovers and birdwatchers may want to check out Ousteri Lake for the many migratory and residential birds here.

Those looking to indulge in some retail therapy can head to Landour Bazar. The markets here stock everything from clothing, artifacts to local spices. Trails like Naag Tibba and Har ki Dun is a favourite with trekkers.

From nature enthusiasts to adventure seekers, this hill station in the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu has something for everyone. The Kodaikanal Lake with its enchanting boat rides is the most visited spot followed by the meticulously landscaped Bryant Park. The views from Green Valley View Point are stunning. Looking for a challenging yet rewarding trek? Perumal Malai which winds through dense forests, steep trails and breath taking meadows is perfect. Whatever you do don’t miss the eerie yet captivating Guna Caves.

Chikmagalur with its lofty mountains, verdant woods and serene surroundings is a popular choice as a short getaway for Karnataka residents. A stroll around one (or more) of the many coffee estates in the hill station is a must-do experience if you enjoy the outdoors and coffee. Many of these estates provide charming stays in addition to guided tours of the farms. There are some many incredible trekking trails - Mullayangiri trek, Kemmanagundi trek, and the Baba Budangiri trek. Mullayangiri also has some of the most awe-inspiring sunrises. Don’t miss the Ayyanakere and Hirekolale Lake and the Kalhatti falls.

A typical mountain town Bir is also the paragliding capital of India which attracts adventure-enthusiasts from all over the world. But there is so much more to this tiny hamlet. One can explore Tibetan monasteries, embark on hiking trails that lead to secret waterfalls, or simply enjoy the green landscapes and the serenity of the place. The sunsets at Bir are exceptionally beautiful. This place is also known for its quaint cafes that encourage you to linger and enjoy the scenery.

11. Diu

This erstwhile Portuguese colony is the perfect blend of Goa and Pondicherry. There’s a lot to explore including picturesque beaches and ancient monuments. The Diu fort built in 1535 is the most visited landmark followed by the mysterious Naida caves and the UNESCO heritage site of St Paul’s Church. If you are looking for a swim the Nagao Beach is perfect. Reserve time for a walk in Vanakbara a fascinating little fishing village packed with colourful fishing boats and bustling activity.

12. Sariska, Rajasthan

A well-known tiger reserve in Rajasthan's Alwar district, Sariska is one of the most popular weekend escapes from Delhi. Take a jeep safari through the enchanting forest before heading to see the magnificent Sariska Palace, which used to be the royal residence of Alwar. A visit to Pandupol Temple is always worthwhile. Other well-known sights in this area are Siliserh Lake (holds one of the largest populations of crocodiles) Kalighati, and the Kankwadi Fort.

13. Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu

Mahabalipuram will leave you awe struck with its historical temples, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and gorgeous beaches. Start with a sunrise at Mahabalipuram beach and then head to the Shore Temple devoted to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. One of the most popular tourist attractions of Mahabalipuram is the Krishna’s Butter Ball a precariously balanced boulder said to be a hunk of stolen butter dropped by the gods. Other popular attractions include the Crocodile Farm, Cave temples and the Indian Seashell Museum. For adrenalin seekers there are many surf spots in the city that cater to both beginners and experts.

14. Igatpuri, Nashik, Maharashtra

This beautiful hamlet is home to Kalsubai the highest peak in Maharashtra. The hill offers breath taking views and an exciting trek. The other attractions include the Tringalwadi Fort which acted as a watchtower for the Maratha forces during battles with the British, Trimbakeshwar Temple one of the country's twelve Jyotirlingas and the mesmerising Vihigaon Waterfalls. Igatpuri is home to the world’s largest meditation center - Vipassana Institute, which makes it a must on your list of places to visit in Igatpuri. When night falls you could pitch a tent by Talegaon lake under a star sprangled sky.

15. Lepchajagat, West Bengal

This quaint hamlet near Darjeeling is studded with thick oak, firs and rhododendron trees. Combine that with magnificent views of the Kangchenjunga, wonderful birdlife, tranquil settings and you have the perfect weekend getaway from Kolkata. With no local markets to explore or popular restaurants to visit, Lepchajagat is where you can roam the forest, disappear in to the mist and listen to the birdsong. Hawa Ghar and Gum Rock are fantastic spot to watch Kanchenjunga in all its glory. Evenings are best spent beside a fireplace sipping a cup of warm Darjeeling tea.
