Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman shared her admiration for anime, particularly the works of renowned Japanese animator and Studio Ghibli co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, in a surprising revelation.
Taking to X, Sitharaman expressed her delight at Miyazaki receiving the Ramon Magsaysay Award, one of Asia's most prestigious honours and regarded as the continent’s Nobel Prize. She praised his iconic films, “My Neighbour Totoro” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” noting that she could watch them "any number of times."
The Finance Minister highlighted that anime isn't just for children, adding, “Anime have much for adults and Miyazaki serves them like a magician.”

Miyazaki, 83, who co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985, is celebrated for his distinctive storytelling and animation style, was awarded for his usage of art to "illuminate the human condition".
His films often explore themes of nature, human connection, and the complexities of life, making them beloved by viewers of all ages.
His masterpieces like “Spirited Away” and “The Boy and the Heron” won Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature Film prize in 2001 and 2023 respectively. He also received received an honorary Oscar in 2014.
Miyazaki's work is not only celebrated for its stunning visuals but also for its deep-rooted messages on environmental protection, peace, and humanity. The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation highlighted Miyazaki's exceptional ability to convey challenging themes in a manner that resonates with children and adults alike, making him a pioneer in his field.
The award, established in honour of former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, aims to recognise and celebrate those who exemplify the highest standards of integrity and service to society.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Manila this November, where Miyazaki and the other laureates will be formally honoured for their achievements.
