Following in the footsteps of the likes of "MBA Chaiwala", a 21-year-old in Delhi has taken an unexpected career path -- selling paani puri on the street after earning a BTech degree.
Tapsi Upadhyay recently featured in a video shared online by food blogger "Are you hungry". It has gathered over 3.4 lakh likes on Instagram. Upadhyay also has her own social media account called "Btech Paani Puri Wali", with over 7,000 followers.
The video showed Upadhyay driving her paani puri cart, hooked to a motorcycle, on a busy road in West Delhi.
Once at her spot, she began preparing for the day -- cleaning her stall, pouring a load of gol gappas into an inbuilt shelf and stirring the savoury filling.
Upadhyay tries to make healthier paani puris-- air frying them and not using maida (refined white flour). She serves the snack in plates made using dried leaves.
While she did not detail why she chose this vocation, Upadhyay spoke about the innumerable questions thrown at her.
"People ask me why are you doing this after a BTech degree," she said in the Instagram video. "Others say this is not a woman's work and I should be home, doing household chores."
Upadhyay is neither deterred by those comments, nor her young age.
"Age is just a number," she said. "I never paid heed to them (her critics)."
Many social media users lauded the young woman.
"She is doing everything it takes to be her own boss," one user said. "And being financially independent. Stop thinking of what others might think."
"Successful independent women," another wrote.
"Good job," a third person commented.
There were many others who said she "wasted money" on a degree and was trying to gain social media attention.
