A man travelling from Mumbai to Bengaluru was trapped inside the toilet of a SpiceJet plane for the entire duration of the flight on Tuesday and had to be rescued by the Bengaluru airport ground staff who broke open the toilet door. The airline said he was stuck because of a "malfunction in the door lock" and that he is being provided a full refund.
"Throughout the journey, our crew provided assistance and guidance to the passenger. Upon arrival, an engineer opened the lavatory door, and the passenger received immediate medical support," a SpiceJet spokesperson said.
An X user shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp note in which the cousin of the passenger described the man’s ordeal as he was stuck inside the plane’s toilet.
According to the note, the man, who was allotted seat 14D, was travelling on a SpiceJet flight which took off from Mumbai at 2:10 am. After take-off, the passenger went to the toilet following which his ordeal began.
“Had to suffer a lot inside rest room, it was really suffocating and was hard to breathe. He had breathing issues while he was locked inside the rest room,” the complaint said.
The X user also shared a hand-written note that the crew wrote for the harrowed passenger and presumably slipped in through the gap in the door.
“Sir, we tried our best to open the door, However, we could not open. Do not panic. We are landing in a few minutes,” the note written in capital letters said.
“So please close the commode lid and sit on it and secure yourself. As soon as the main door is open, engineer will come. Do not panic.”
The flight landed in Bengaluru at around 3:45 am, a little over 1.5 hours after take-off. An engineer at the airport broke open the door following which the passenger was given medical support.
