The National Institutional Ranking Framework which aims to assist students in making the right choice, has released its first list. Its the first govt ranking of top college and universities of the country and the list of winners has several usual suspects.

Which is the best college, what is the right course, where should I apply ? Questions that concern thousands of students around the country as they gear up for the great college hunt 2016. As the youngsters take the first step towards shaping their careers, the Government (Govt) is offering some help, reports CNBC-TV18's Aishwarya Nir. The National Institutional Ranking Framework which aims to assist students in making the right choice, has released its first list. Its the first govt ranking of top college and universities of the country and the list of winners has several usual suspects. As of now the rankings cover institutes under 4 educational categories - engineering, management, university and pharmacy and rate them on several parameters including perception among academic stakeholders. " I am happy that the parameter of perception was incorporated in the procedure. 1,50,000 votes were casted by these 60,000 people to select the top insittutes. data wasn't verified by regulators but also by third party " says Minister for Human Resource Development for Govt Of India, Smriti Irani.

Here's how the 2016 rankings list stack up

Top Engineering Colleges1. IIT Madras2. IIT Bombay3. IIT KharagpurSource: #IndiaRankings2016

The Indian Institutes of Technology bag the top spots with IIT Madras ranking the highest, followed by IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur. These institutes were evaluated on the basis of research, professional practice and collaborative performance. Graduate placements, and social outreach were some of the other criteria used to rank institutes in this category

Top Management Colleges1. IIM Bangaluru2. IIM Ahmedabad3. IIM CalcuttaSource: #IndiaRankings2016

The top three spots in the management institute category saw a clean sweep from the IIMs. Indian Institute of Management Bengaluru was crowned the best followed by IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta on the third spot. Quality of faculty and facilities provided by the institue were some of the crucial benchmarks for evaluating management colleges

Admistthe best institutes for pharmacy, Manipal College Of Pharmaceutical Sciences ranked number one followed by University Institute Of Pharmaceutical Sciences-Chandigarh and Jamia Hamdard, Delhi on the third spot..

Top Universities In India1. Indian Institute Of Science Bengaluru2. Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai3. Jawahar Lal Nehru University, DelhiSource: #IndiaRankings2016

As far as the highest ranked universities of the country is concerned out of the total 100 universities, Indian Institute Of Science Bengaluru bagged the top spot followed by Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai which stood second, and Jawahar Lal Nehru University, Delhi which was adjudged the third best in the country. The universities were ranked on the basis perception of the institute by stakeholders along with other criteria like outreach to women and socially challenged persons.

These rankings of Indian universities won't just be beneficial to Indian students; infact will also help students globally make the right choices.
