Isha Ambani made a case for sustainability and ‘swadeshi’ with her fashion choices at this year’s Met Gala. For the world’s biggest night in fashion, Isha Ambani wore a custom Rahul Mishra creation that took 10,000 hours to complete. Her floral sari-inspired gown was intricately hand-embroidered at villages across India before it reached the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City – the venue for the annual Met Gala.
The theme for this year’s Met Gala is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” In keeping with the dress code “The Garden of Time,” Isha Ambani’s outfit featured delicate samples of flowers, butterflies, and dragonflies that were meticulously integrated from Rahul Mishra’s archives into its design.
Anaita Shroff Adajania, who styled Ambani for the fundraising event, said that traditional embroidery techniques such as Fareesha, Zardozi, Nakshi, and Dabka, as well as French knots were used to embroider the samples into the train of Ambani’s gown.
“This look embraces sustainability by incorporating elements from Rahul’s past collections,” she explained.
“The magnificent look was intricately hand-embroidered at Rahul Mishra’s ateliers across several Indian villages, supporting hundreds of local craftspeople and weavers,” Adajania added.
Florals, animals and vintage couture abounded at the Met Gala 2024. The extravaganza's dress code this year is "The Garden of Time" -- which draws inspiration from the 1962 short story of the same name, written by English writer J.G. Ballard.
Isha Ambani was not the only Indian to be invited to the Met Gala this year – Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt stunned in a Sabyasachi saree.
