The last 12 months have witnessed large-scale layoffs at software giants Google who have been forced to downsize their headcounts for one or more reasons.  Despite the layoffs, however, a job at Google remains among the more sought after opportunities for techies in India and around the world.

However, getting a role with the software giants is not as easy as it sounds and a techie recently shared how he landed a job at Google after clearing eight rounds of interviews and how not chasing for the job at Google helped him, after twin rejections in 2016 and 2018.

Sahil Gaba was working at Amazon when a Google recruiter contacted him for an interview in 2021. The techie had found the going tough to get a new role elsewhere and decided to attempt again after facing rejections at multiple companies.

"I for a long time at that point and had faced hundreds of rejections by then. I had kind of stopped caring about the results of the interviews because I had taken and failed so many of them," Gaba told Business Insider.

The techie said that a key factor that helped him get the Google job in hois third attempt was because he was not desperate to leave his existing role at Amazon.

"I was enjoying working with my coworkers at Amazon. I didn't really have any problem staying back either," he said.

He also felt that having sufficient experience with coding also played a part in him getting the Google job. "While I was new, I would be under more pressure while writing the code. Now writing the code is not the challenge -as long as I could come up with the solution, the writing part was straightforward," he said.

Gaba decided to adopt a commonly followed practice in the IT industry-to give interviews with competitors- during the third round and sat for interviews at firms such as Meta and Uber.

He also said urged candidates to look to get jobs without using a referral as he felt that one was sending their applications to a recruiter and not to a job, while applying for roles.

"Essentially you're not applying for a job, you're applying for a recruiter," he said.
