Box office: Slow start for Bhardwaj's expensive venture Rangoon

After eighty-two years, Vishal Bhardwaj brings 'Fearless Nadia' back to the screens with one of his most ambitious venture, 'Rangoon'. Not many of us would remember who she was but, a Google search would tell us that back in 1935 this stunt woman became a rage with the movie 'Hunterwali' (woman with a whip).

The Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan starrer Rangoon, which hit the screens today, is Bhardwaj’s most expensive film so far. The entire budget of the film is estimated to be Rs 80 crore with production cost at around Rs 40 crore.

This indicates that to earn profits, the movie has to make box office collections in the range of Rs 6 crore on its opening day. For the movie to be a profitable venture, it has to earn Rs 80 crore from its India business alone.

This could be a tall ask considering the opening response for the movie has been poor. In spite of the hype, Rangoon received for its stars and promo, the pre-bookings remained low for the movie. Morning shows of the movie did not see great response from the viewers but there is a chance for Rangoon to pick-up pace in the evening shows. Long weekend (public holiday on Friday on account of Mahashivratri) can also help movie earn more this week.

The film, which is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Viacom 18, opened approximately in 1800 screens in India. The movie will be allocated to 60 percent of screens in metros and multiplexes, 40 percent to single screens and mass centres while overseas it will release on 300 screens.
