Infosys founder Narayana Murthy’s recent statement that Indian youth must work for 70 hours a week to boost the country’s overall productivity has caused a flutter on social media. While there are some people who agree with Murthy, others have had mixed reactions to the same.
On Sunday, Edelweiss MF’s MD and CEO Radhika Gupta, weighed in on the issue and said that many Indian women have been working for more than 70 hours a week to build India and the next generation. She shared a post about the same on X (formerly Twitter) and it has gone viral online.
“Between offices and homes, many Indian women have been working many more than seventy hour weeks to build India (through our work) and the next generation of Indians (our children). For years and decades. With a smile, and without a demand for overtime. Funnily, no one has debated about us on Twitter,” she wrote.

Needless to say that Gupta’s post triggered an array of reactions from social media users and they expressed their opinions in the comments section.
“Indian women's tireless dedication deserves recognition,” a user wrote. Another user commented, “Very much agree. I'm married to one such lady. She has been managing all these for the last 18+ years when we had our son. A best employee at work, and best at everything, however it does take a toll on her at times but she comes back with rigor. I'm privileged.”
“Actually my husband also did a lot to bring up our son, I wasn’t the only one at home doing extra hours. Also work life in Mumbai tends to be long hours; We all have to travel long hours to work and back,” a third user exclaimed.
“Kudos to the unsung heroes powering India's progress, often with a smile that never fades,” a fourth user remarked.
Meanwhile, a Bengaluru-based cardiologist, Dr Deepak Krishnamurthy, said that working for over 12 hours a day with no time to exercise, socialise and recreate is the cause behind young people getting heart attacks.
He was referring to Murthy’s 70-hour work week advice through his viral post.
