'Bengaluru is another Gurgaon': Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw slams civic bodies over poor infra

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has been vocal about highlighting the problems citizens face in Bengaluru, especially due to its poor infrastructure and waste management.

Biocon's executive chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has criticised the state of urban governance in Bengaluru, comparing the city's plight to Gurgaon and calling out the administration for neglecting basic infrastructure and civic responsibilities.

“This is the fate of every rich city. Bengaluru is another Gurgaon,” Mazumdar-Shaw posted on X, responding to author and columnist Suhel Seth’s commentary on Gurgaon’s flooding and garbage crisis. “The state plunders and kills the golden goose with no responsibility to provide basic infrastructure and civic amenities—building rules are flouted to make money,” she added.

On Friday, the billionaire entrepreneur had shared pictures of garbage dumped on roads and questioned Bengaluru's civic body, BBMP, on why the trash was not cleared.

Her concerns were echoed by Seth, but for Gurgaon. The entrepreneur, who has also been sharing regular updates on X about the deteriorating conditions in the city, recently described the city as “a shame on this country” during a panel hosted by The Indian Express in Delhi. He criticised the lack of governance despite the city’s proximity to the national capital.

“Every year, without government help, we create a Venice for people to enjoy,” Seth said sarcastically. “We litter the streets with garbage to show the egalitarian spirit of Gurugram. We have more liquor vends than functioning traffic lights. We have more bars than we have schools.”

Calling for urgent intervention, Seth said the city needed a “non-hostile takeover” to restore basic governance. “You can’t have smart cities with unsmart leaders,” he said, targeting Haryana’s political leadership and civic administration.
