Eutelsat said it has partnered with the Indian Navy’s INSV Kaundinya team to support one of its most prestigious maritime heritage and strategic initiatives by providing OneWeb’s high-speed Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity for a historic voyage of national importance.

Project Kaundinya is a landmark expedition undertaken aboard INSV Kaundinya, a traditionally built stitched-plank sailing vessel inspired by ancient Indian shipbuilding traditions. The voyage retraces historic maritime trade routes, celebrating India’s seafaring legacy while underscoring contemporary maritime innovation and national pride.

To support the journey, Eutelsat deployed its OneWeb LEO satellite connectivity onboard the vessel, ensuring reliable, real-time communication throughout the expedition. Given the vessel’s traditional design and lack of conventional communications infrastructure, OneWeb served as the sole connectivity link, enabling continuous contact with shore-based teams.

Sanjeev Sanyal, Member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM), a core member of the crew and architect of Project Kaundinya, said reliable satellite connectivity was critical to the voyage. “Throughout the journey, OneWeb connectivity proved invaluable, allowing us to stay in touch with teams onshore, support live communications, and sustain crew morale during long and challenging stretches at sea,” he said.

The voyage is being documented in real time, with live updates transmitted via OneWeb’s satellite network. The deployment highlights the resilience and adaptability of OneWeb’s LEO technology in mission-critical maritime environments, reinforcing its role in maritime security, crew welfare, and strategic communications.

Neha Idnani, Regional Vice President for APAC at Eutelsat and Board Director of OneWeb India, said the company was honoured to enable connectivity for the historic mission. “Project Kaundinya represents a unique convergence of India’s maritime heritage, national ambition, and technological innovation. Our OneWeb LEO technology is purpose-built for environments where safety, resilience, and real-time communication are essential,” she said, congratulating the crew on safely reaching their first destination in Muscat, Oman.

The collaboration underscores Eutelsat’s long-term commitment to supporting initiatives of national importance, particularly across defence, government, and humanitarian domains, through secure and resilient satellite connectivity.
