Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp has announced that passkeys support is now rolling out on iPhones. The instant messaging platform took to X to make the announcement. “Passkeys are rolling out now on iOS, a more secure (and easier!) way to log back in with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode,” said WhatsApp in the post on X. When users set up their WhatsApp account, instead of using an OTP or SMS passcode, they can simply use passkeys to get started. WhatsApp had rolled out passkey support for Android earlier this year.
What are passkeys?Passkeys are a new — and more secure — method to log in to websites and apps, ditching passwords altogether. Think of it like a digital key for each account. These keys are stored securely on your device and can't be stolen by hackers, unlike passwords. Instead of remembering complex combinations, users can rely on their phone or computer's security features, like fingerprint or face scan, to verify your identity.
How to set up passkeys on WhatsApp?Here is how you can set up passkeys on WhatsApp:
Open WhatsApp and head to Settings.
In Settings, navigate to the "Account" section.
Look for a new option called "Passkeys" and tap on it.
You'll see a prompt to "Create a Passkey." Tap "Continue."
Your iPhone might ask you to confirm using your existing screen lock (PIN, Face ID, or Touch ID). This creates a secure link between your WhatsApp account and your phone's biometric login.
Now, when you log in to WhatsApp on a new device, you'll be able to verify your identity using your phone's security features instead of a six-digit code.
Passkeys are a relatively new feature. Make sure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version for compatibility. Also, this is a gradual roll out and will reach users in the next few days. So if you don't see passkey support immediately, wait for some time as it should arrive soon.
