The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on September 14 tweeted that it has seized over two lakh counterfeit Apple AirPods from Hong Kong, valued at nearly $398,000, except that they were not AirPods but OnePlus Buds.
The CDP said it seized these supposed AirPods clones at an air cargo facility located at John F. Kennedy International Airport. “CBP officers are protecting the American public from various dangers on a daily basis,” said Troy Miller, Director of CBP’s New York Field Operations. “The interception of these counterfeit earbuds is a direct reflection of the vigilance and commitment to mission success by our CBP Officers daily.”
However, images uploaded by the CBP clearly suggest the seized earbuds are OnePlus Buds. The box shows the OnePlus branding and the name of the product (OnePlus Buds White).
THAT'S NOT AN —CBP officers at JFK Airport recently seized 2,000 counterfeit Apple AirPods from Hong Kong, valued at $398K had they been genuine. Details via @CBPNewYorkCity: https://t.co/XMgjkfT56ipic.twitter.com/Ofn9REJ9ZB — CBP (@CBP) September 14, 2020
The possible reason for the CBP to seize these OnePlus Buds and call them “counterfeit Apple AirPods” could be the almost-similar design. The OnePlus Buds have the same stem design like the Apple AirPods. The only noticeable difference between the two wireless earbuds is that the OnePlus Buds have a bigger circular design near the earpiece on the outside. Considering the legitimate branding, it is evident that these seized products are not Apple AirPods but OnePlus Buds.
It is unknown at the moment if the seized OnePlus Buds have been released.
