A timeline of Sam Altman's ouster and return to OpenAIThe sudden removal of Altman caught both OpenAI's employees and its major investors, including Microsoft, off guard.
  • In a sudden reversal, OpenAI took to X (formerly known as Twitter) on November 22 to announce Sam Altman's reinstatement as CEO. This decision follows a wave of criticism from both employees and investors, who vehemently opposed the board's abrupt removal of Altman just last week.
  • The company stated that a new initial board has been inducted, including Bret Taylor, former co-CEO of Salesforce, and Larry Summers, former Secretary of the Treasury. However, Adam D'Angelo, co-founder and CEO of Quora, will continue to serve on the board.

Why Anthropic stands a good chance to pull aheadWho could be the winner of the fierce battle between tech companies to edge ahead in AI development? While OpenAI is getting all the attention, don’t lose sight of Anthropic, with its unique philosophy of Constitutional AI and lack of hesitation to pump in billions of dollars to scale up its larger large learning models.
  • The first distinguishing aspect of Anthropic is the composition and quality of its leadership. At its helm is Dario Amodei, who, along with three other co-founders, are former employees of OpenAI. They were instrumental in making the advances that made Chat GPT-2 possible, and they are also responsible for much of the foundational research that led to breakthroughs in LLMs.
  • Amodei, in particular, has a rich pedigree in the domain of Machine Learning and AI, and variegated academic exposure to supplement his technical acumen.

The contradictions at the heart of OpenAIThe belief that a technology as powerful as AI can be overseen by a non-profit entity is a Utopian one.
  • OpenAI currently has an unconventional structure, functioning as a partnership between a non-profit research organisation and a for-profit subsidiary.
  • The OpenAI board has been far from open in detailing the reasons for sacking Sam Altman The first step in the slippery slope towards commercialisation was in March 2019, when Open AI converted itself from a pure non-profit organisation into a "capped profit’’ one AI research needs lots of money, which only investors can supply.
