Netflix will soon let users adjust the playback speed of TV shows and movies. The company has been testing the playback speed control feature since 2019 and will soon roll it out first to Android users.
Once the feature is made available, users can adjust the playback speed of the shows or movies they are watching on the Netflix Android app. Netflix told The Verge that the update was being rolled out to Android users starting August 3.
Users can set the playback speed to slow at 0.5x or 0.75x or set to 1.25x/ 1.5x for faster playback. These playback controls will have to be activated manually for every title.
Netflix explained that it built this feature with creator concerns in mind by limiting the number of speeds and also resetting the selection on each viewing session. To ensure the quality of the content isn’t disrupted, Netflix worked on automatically correcting “the pitch in the audio at faster and slower speeds,” according to the company.
“We’ve also been mindful of the concerns of some creators. It’s why we have capped the range of playback speeds and require members to vary the speed each time they watch something new — versus fixing their settings based on the last speed they used.”
The feature will be made available first on the Android app, followed by a release on the iOS and web in the future.
