Locals complain about a dearth of industries in the region, except a few prominent sugar mills
Pilibhit Lok Sabha Election 2024: Varun Gandhi's ticket cancellation has sparked intense speculation about his next political move. The possibility of him aligning with the Congress or considering other options has become a subject of considerable interest and discussion among political observers and pundits.
The new faces in the BJP list included Saket Mishra from Shrawasti, Kripa Shankar Singh from Jaunpur and Ritesh Pandey from Ambedkarnagar
The development comes incidentally at a time of a raging debate over his cousin and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's comments in London
At a public function in Arsiaboj village in Baheri assembly segment, which falls under his parliamentary constituency of Pilibhit, Gandhi said if sugar mills don't start paying dues to farmers immediately, a protest meet by cane-growers will be organised at their gates.
According to an amendment made to this in May, 2022, all groups of rare disease patients were assured a financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh for treatment, he said.
In an apparent dig at his own party, Gandhi said he is working for an India where children and youth get respect, and where nobody is compelled to bow his head for help.
The Pilibhit MP posted a video purportedly showing some ration card holders complaining about being forced to pay Rs 20 to buy the flag.
Referring to his party leader Sushil Modi's notice in the Rajya Sabha demanding a discussion on "ending the culture of freebies", Gandhi in a tweet said, "Before pointing fingers at the relief given to the public, we should look within."
"These figures given by the government in Parliament are a telling of the unemployment situation. In the last eight years, 22 crore youths applied for jobs in Central departments, out of which only seven lakh got employment. When about one crore sanctioned posts are vacant in the country, who is responsible for this situation?" Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.
Sreeja's grandmother said, "He never came to see her (Sreeja), never even tried to contact her. After my daughter's death, he remarried and build a separate family..."
AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue while JD(U) leader Upendra Kushwaha and BJP MP Varun Gandhi also tweeted a purported document linked to the army’s recruitment exercise to question the need for a caste certificate and raised concerns.
In a letter to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Gandhi said the young population has shared their questions and doubts with him about the radical changes in the soldiers' recruitment process which also proposes that the 75 per cent of the recruits under the scheme will retire after four years of service without pension.
The protests against the scheme turned violent as army aspirants disrupted rail and road traffic in several parts of Bihar for the second consecutive day on June 16
Varun Gandhi said more fast-paced initiatives will have to be taken to fulfill the pledge of giving employment to two crore persons.
For the last several months, the 41-year-old MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Pilbhit has been expressing views on various issues – from farm laws to inflation – that are not in line with the BJP’s official stand.
For the BJP, which won 51 of the 59 seats in 2017, the challenge would be to retain seats in the Terai region where its MP, Varun Gandhi, has been critical of the state as well as the Union government on a host of issues
Criticising the night curfew decision, Varun Gandhi said, "Imposing curfew in night after assembling lakhs of people for rallies in the day defies the common man’s wisdom”.
Gandhi said avenues of employment for the average young person in rural India are largely restricted to seeking government jobs but the government is employing less than before in every sector be it defence, police, railways or education.
In a letter to the prime minister, the MP from Pilibhit in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh also asked him to take action against Union minister Ajay Kumar Mishra 'Teni' for the violence in Lakhmipur Kheri without taking his name. Gandhi thanked Modi for repealing the three farm laws.
People can never forget the infinite sacrifices of our freedom movement and the millions of lives lost and families destroyed, he said, asserting that to belittle it in this "shameful manner" cannot be condoned simply as a careless or callous statement.
Varun Gandhi also demanded a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP), also one of the demands of farmer unions protesting against three farm laws, saying farmers will continue to be exploited in 'mandis' (markets for agricultural produce) as long as this is not done.
"Samodh Singh, a farmer of Uttar Pradesh, had been running around mandis for the last 15 days to sell his paddy crop. When paddy did not sell, he in frustration put fire to it himself. Where has this system brought the farmers? The need of the hour is to rethink our agriculture policy," he said.
The BJP MP has been vocal in empathising with farmers agitating against the three agri laws enacted by the Modi government and sharing Vajpayee's speech is seen as his message to the central government.
An editorial in the Sena mouthpiece "Saamana" also asked whether the blood of other MPs had “turned cold” even after seeing the “horrific” incident at Lakhmipur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh where eight people, including four farmers, were killed earlier this month.
