The world's leading vegetable oil buyer had imported 11.82 million tonnes of vegetable oils during the previous year. Palm oil makes up 70 percent of the country's total vegetable oil imports.
The country had shipped 1,56,942 tonnes of oilmeals, used as animal feed, in the same period last year.
The last increase of customs duty on refined and crude edible oils was by 5 percent in December, 2014. At present, the duty on import of crude oil is 7.5 percent and on refined, it is 15 percent.
The import duties were last increased in December. In a memorandum submitted to the government on Monday, Solvent Extractor's Association (SEA) said, "We would like to bring to your kind notice the alarming increase in import of edible oils seriously hurting the domestic farmers and the vegetable oil refiners."
Oilmeals exports increased by 58% to 2,50,335 tonnes in June from 1,58,750 tonnes in the same month last year, helped by record oilseeds output, according to trade data released today.
