The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) may revamp the existing mobile number portability (MNP) rules in the next two months to make it more consumer-friendly and prompt.
From April 1, Airtel will offer free incoming calls and SMSes while roaming across India, and there will be no extra charges on on outgoing calls and data while outstation.

According to the data tabled by Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha in the Lok Sabha, most number cases related to violation of MNP norms were reported in 2013-14 and their number declined sharply to 9 in 2015-16.
Telecom operator Vodafone has been the top gainer of customers through mobile number portability facility while Reliance Communications is the biggest loser.
"Out of the total outstanding of Rs 54,828.25 crore, the amount under litigation is Rs 44,380.91 crore pertaining to major telecom service providers," Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
"Idea remains the biggest gainer with 17 million net port-ins until end-January 2016. Not surprisingly, RCOM, Aircel and TTSL are the biggest losers. BSNL's performance is surprisingly respectable," Kotak Institutional Equities said in a note.
"BSNL expects to turn profitable in next four years or so, for which BSNL is taking several steps like augmentation of mobile network," Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
North eastern states are barred from MNP, implemented in the rest of the country on July 3 for security reason, he said. He said that over 100 towers located in remote areas of the region have been shut down due to cost overrun. These towers were earlier funded by the centre under the Universal Service Obligation (USO) scheme.
With this facility, a mobile subscriber will not have to pay roaming charges once the number gets transferred to another telecom circle or state under the scheme. It will be treated as local number of that area.
The government has fixed July 3 as the deadline for a national rollout of MNP. The company said with national MNP, mobile customers across the country can now easily shift between states without having to change their mobile number.
According to a report in the Newspaper, full mobile number portability was initially slated to be operational by May 3. However, it could not be done because of the technical requirements for the implementation of the same.

In a statement today, Trai said it has "Issued sixth amendment to the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulation, 2009, which will facilitate full Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in the country, with effect from May 3, 2015."
Idea Cellular has been the biggest net gainer of mobile subscribers though MNP service, as per data till October, 2014 presented in the Lok Sabha.
Currently, MNP norms allow users to retain their numbers while changing their operators within the same service area. India has 22 telecom circles.
Mobile phone users will soon be able to change their telecom operators and retain their numbers even if they are relocating to areas outside the service providers' operations.
