Of the pending demands, Rs 3,500 crore will be waived, as per the Budget announcement on Feb 1, 2024.
With the government spending over 50 crore in lawyers’ fees in 2021-22, and with a large number of disputes being decided in favour of private parties with penal rates of interest, the government has realised that it's in its interest to minimise litigation.
A section of lawyers said the scheme encourages arbitration as it provides finality to the proceedings
The group said it would repurchase up to USD 5.4 billion of its own outstanding bonds, adding that its liquidity position is comfortable enough to carry out the buyback.
