Prime Minister Narendra Modi had yesterday announced that the government will not re-promulgate the controversial Ordinance on Land Acquisition which expires on Monday and declared readiness to incorporate any suggestion in the bill, which is pending in Rajya Sabha.
Rural Development Minister Birender Singh said the government has from the very beginning maintained that it has no objection in accepting good suggestions from any institution, political leader, political party or farmers.
Refraining from giving a time line for convening a joint session of the Parliament, Jaitley exuded hope that the land reforms bill in its new shape would be able to get through the Rajya Sabha, where the ruling party and its coalition partners do not have a majority.
The death of farmer Gajendra Singh, who hanged himself from a tree during Aam Aadmi party's anti-Land Bill rally in New Delhi on Wednesday, dominated debate in Parliament on Thursday.
India growing at five percent , six percent or even seven percent is not an India that is going to face up this challenge (of large young population)," Arun Jaitley said at the conference organised by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based top American think-tank.
Earlier this month, Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister said, “This government wants 100 smart cities but for that to happen we have to amend the land law. We'll try for consensus but if its doesn't happen then we'll push it through.â€
The new law mandates that land will have to be bought at four times the market rate in rural areas and at double the market rate in urban areas.
In a first of his actions as the Rural Development minister, Jairam Ramesh is putting the draft land acquisition bill out in the public domain for comments. Siddharth Zarabi of CNBC-TV18 details the contents of the draft bill.
