Pune Election Results Live: BJP takes strong lead in Pawar bastion, ahead in over 90 seats against united NCP's 25

Contesting from jail, Sonali Vanraj Andekar (35) and Lakshmi Udaykant Andekar (60), both candidates of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, won the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections from ward number 23.

NCP chief and Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said the “will of the people is supreme”, adding that he accepts it “with full respect.”  While congratulating and extending his best wishes to the winning candidates, Pawar assured that his party would continue to work with “greater responsibility, honesty, and double the vigor to regain the trust of the people.” “I express the expectation that all the victorious candidates will prioritize the issues of the people in their respective municipal corporations and accelerate the work of development and public welfare,” Pawar said in a post on X.

BJP candidate Ganesh Ghosh told ANI, "This is a victory of the candidates who trusted us and made us victorious. I express my gratitude to all voters and all BJP leaders...The entire country is transforming. Pune and the people of Pune are with them. Everyone knows that the BJP brings everyone together and works for development."

Union Minister Piyush Goyal has hit out at the MVA and said that the results of the Maharashtra municipal corporation elections show people don't trust him. "We have received the blessings of the people. Mahayuti is winning on 24 civic bodies. The MVA, comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and the NCP (SP), has won just 7 or 8 per cent wards. This shows that people don't trust him," he said.

The State Election Commission announced on Friday that 65 candidates from ten municipal corporations in Maharashtra were declared elected unopposed before the elections scheduled for January 15, PTI reported.

Speaking on the Maharashtra Municipal polls, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi was quoted by ANI, “Today, in the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation elections, the BJP and our coalition partners achieved a significant victory. This demonstrates that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the BJP and NDA are increasingly gaining support.”

“What does the future hold? In whose hands is it safe? It looks like that Punekar's have voted on the basis of 'vichar, pragati, vikas, aur bhavishya' (thoughts, prosperity, development, and the future). That is what I think is the basis people have voted (for us), under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With the trends, it looks like the BJP will lead the government.”

It shouldn’t come as a surprise if we cross 125 in Pune…The same is the situation in Mumbai…It is one-sided in Pimpri, the same goes for Kolhapur and Sangli…Across Maharashtra, mahauyti will have a good result. Out of 29, there will be Mahayuti in at least 28; most of these will be from the BJP.”

BJP spokesperson and MP Sudhanshu Trivedi slammed the INDIA bloc and said, “Those who cannot even keep their alliance partners together are now making allegations. The reality is that the INDI Alliance has not won a single state or local body election since 2024. They cannot maintain 'love' within their alliance, but their 'love' for Pakistan is clearly visible.”

Murlidhar Mohol said, “The trends coming before us make it seem that be it Pune or Pimpri-Chinchwad, BJP will do a clean sweep. BJP contests on just one agenda, that of development,” reported ANI. He added, "We had the leadership of PM Modi and CM Fadnavis over the issue of development. Seeing this, the people of Pune cast their vote."

In Pimpri Chinchwad, the BJP is holding clear lead in 77 seats while Ajit Pawar's NCP and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena are currently leading in 37 and 10 seats respectively.

The BJP continued to dominate the count at 1 pm, leading in 90 seats and securing victory in three, while both factions of the NCP were seen struggling to make an impact.

BJP is ahead in 42 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) in four, NCP(SP) in three, Congress two.

BJP is leading in 12 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) in five and Shiv Sena in four.

Two BJP candidates were elected unopposed in the Pune Municipal Corporation elections after their rivals withdrew from the contest on the final day of nomination withdrawal. In Ward 35 (Suncity–Manikbaug), Manjusha Nagpure and Shrikant Jagtap secured victory without a contest, officials said.

According to a report in PTI, most exit polls have given the BJP an edge in the 165-member Pune Municipal Corporation polls.

The Pune Municipal Corporation election witnessed a keen contest as the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and NCP (SP), led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and his uncle Sharad Pawar, along with Supriya Sule, decided to fight the municipal polls together, reshaping the political equations in Pune.

The voter turnout on Thursday was around 58%, almost 6% less than 2017 elections, which had recorded 64% turnout. Pimpri-Chinchwad has 17.13 lakh voters.

Union Minister and BJP leader Murlidhar Mohol said his party would get a majority in the Pune civic body. "The BJP will get 120-125 seats in the 165-member Pune Municipal Corporation," he claimed at a press conference after polling ended.

Pune follows multiple member ward system. In this, each municipal ward elects three or four corporators, instead of one. For example, the Pune Municipal Corporation has 41 wards. Each ward elects four corporators, and the general body has 162 members. So each voter casts multiple votes.

The last PMC elections were held on February 21, 2017, with a voter turnout of 55.45 per cent. At that time, 1,090 candidates were in the fray.

Nearly two and a half years after the NCP split in 2023, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the NCP (Sharad Pawar) have come together to fight the elections together. However, CM Devendra Fadnavis has called the NCP alliance a localised arrangement limited to a couple of municipal corporations.

In Pimpri-Chinchwad, 128 seats across 32 wards are up for grabs. The PCMC has a voter base of 17,13,891 electors, who will choose their representatives.

In the Pune Municipal Corporation elections, 1,165 candidates are contesting across 41 wards for 165 seats. Around 35.51 lakh voters are eligible to decide the fate of these candidates.
