Github

GitHub is a hosting platform for software development where developers host source code for ongoing projects. The service was founded in 2008 and became a subsidiary of Microsoft in 2018. The platform features several collaboration tools such as bug tracking, feature requests, task manager, integration and maintains dedicated wiki’s for each project. GitHub is commonly used to host various open-source projects and in November 2021, the platform reported that it had over 73 million active developers, with more than 200 million projects hosted on the platform. The platform is the largest hub for source code online. The software which enables the hosting and updation of repositories is called Git, written by Linux creator, Linus Torvalds. Git allows for full tracking of version changes and updates within a repository, and is an efficient tool for co-ordinating with multiple programmers on a single project. It also supports distributed, non-linear workflows. Anyone can browse and download public repositories but only registered users can upload projects and contribute to existing repositories. The site also has various social networking features like feeds, followers and social graphs that displays the various repositories and forks for a project, along with the developers working on them. In 2020, the site made all core features, including private repositories, free to everyone. More
