Github CEO Thomas Dohmke reveals insights into his children's coding journey.

GitHub's chief executive officer, Thomas Dohmke, has underscored India's potential, pointing to the country's exponential growth on the Microsoft-owned platform.

GitHub's trajectory in India is fueled by its integration of AI across the developer lifecycle. Since its acquisition by Microsoft for $7.5 billion in 2018, GitHub has introduced several AI-driven tools. In 2022, GitHub launched Copilot, a code completion tool powered by OpenAI's GPT-3.

This was followed by Copilot Chat in 2023, designed to facilitate natural language-powered coding, and GitHub Copilot Workspace in April 2024, which offers an AI-enhanced developer environment.

Dohmke shared a personal anecdote to illustrate the everyday utility of Copilot and shared with Moneycontrol the last thing he asked Copilot: "I often use Copilot both in dinner conversations with my co-workers and at home with my family. Recently, I asked Copilot how many bird species exist. While I had heard there were between 9,000 to 10,000 species, recent studies suggest there could be as many as 18,000 species."

GitHub's commitment to AI innovation is evident in its own practices. "At GitHub, we are the earliest adopters of Copilot ourselves. We started using Copilot about six months after we had access to OpenAI's GPT-3 in June 2020," Dohmke revealed.

India, the world’s second-largest Internet economy, is expected to surpass the United States as the largest developer community on GitHub by 2027. Currently, GitHub hosts over 15.4 million developers from India, marking a significant 33 percent year-on-year increase from 13.2 million in 2023. "India is the fastest growing market for GitHub, outpacing even the United States," Dohmke stated.
