Big food companies like Cargill, Future group and Tata Global Beverages have shown interest in launching fortified food items to fight malnutrition, a top official of food safety regulator FSSAI today said.
The company said that pursuant to withdrawal announcement and ban order on June 5, 2015, Nestle India Ltd had recalled stocks of Maggi Noodles and till September 1, 2015 destroyed around 38,000 tonnes of Maggi Noodles.
The popular brand of noodles had passed tests by three government-accredited laboratories, as ordered by the Bombay High Court which in August had lifted ban on the instant noodles that was imposed by food safety regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
The authority is looking at beefing up scientific and technical teams and bringing about more clarity in the product approval process
The move is expected to benefit food companies as they would not require to seek product approval from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) if they comply with these standards. At present, there are 375 FSSAI safety standards for food items but none for food additives and ingredients.
The growth of food processing sector is very vital as it ensures food security and better remuneration to farmers for their produce, said Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
