Weeks ahead of Assembly polls in West Bengal, Governor CV Ananda Bose on Thursday tendered his resignation. However, the reason behind his decision is not known yet.
Former bureaucrat CV Ananda Bose was appointed Governor of West Bengal in November 2022. He is the recipient of the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship.
He is also the first ever Fellow of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, which trains top civil service officers. A prolific writer and columnist, the former bureaucrat has published 40 books in English, Malayalam and Hindi including novels, short stories, poems and essays.
He was chairman of a working group that prepared the development agenda for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. His concept of "affordable housing for all" was adopted by the government.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she was “shocked and deeply concerned” over the sudden resignation of Governor C. V. Ananda Bose and alleged that he may have been subjected to pressure from the Union government ahead of the upcoming state Assembly elections.
She went on to say that she does not know the reason behind the resignation currently but speculated that 'some pressure from the Union Home Minister' propelled Bose to this step.
"The reasons behind his resignation are not known to me at this moment. However, given the prevailing circumstances, I would not be surprised if the Governor has been subjected to some pressure from the Union Home Minister to serve certain serve certain political interests on the eve of the forthcoming State Assembly elections."
"Union Home Minister just informed me that Shri R.N. Ravi is being appointed as Governor of West Bengal. He never consulted with me as per the established convention in this regard. Such actions undermine the spirit of the Constitution of India and and strike at the very foundation of our federal structure.
