The Maharashtra Assembly on February 20 passed the Bill to extend 10 percent reservation to Marathas in education and jobs, similar to what was approved by the state in 2018.
A special Assembly session was convened against the backdrop of the ongoing fast-unto-death by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil.
The reservation was extended based on a report submitted to the state government by the Maharashtra Backward Class Commission (MBCC) headed by chairman Justice (Retired) Sunil Shukre.
Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, while speaking about the passage of Bill in the State Assembly, said, “While giving the Maratha community this reservation, there will be no injustice done to OBCs. The Backward Commission has carefully studied it and it (the Bill) will surely hold up on legal grounds in the court.”
