The Uttar Pradesh government has asked all MLAs to submit proposals for development works worth up to Rs 5 crore in their constituencies, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directing officials to expedite the process and ensure close monitoring of projects at the local level.

The chief minister issued the directions while interacting with MLAs and members of the Legislative Council through a video conference from his official residence. According to sources, the interaction lasted about 30 minutes during which he asked legislators to remain present in their constituencies, address public grievances and supervise development works on the ground.

The chief minister sought detailed proposals from the legislators and asked them to send them to the Chief Minister’s Office within one week. District Magistrates have been directed to examine the proposals and ensure that funds are released after proper scrutiny.

Officials said the initiative aims to speed up development works across districts and ensure that projects reflect local needs and priorities.

During the interaction, the chief minister suggested several types of projects that legislators can propose for their constituencies. These include construction of roads, community centres, barat ghars, bridges and convention centres. MLAs have also been asked to suggest projects related to installation of street lights, construction of public toilets and other facilities that improve civic infrastructure.

The chief minister also said that proposals can include construction of chambers for advocates at tehsil headquarters, district courts and even the high court if required. He emphasised that legislators should identify works based on the specific needs of their areas so that people get direct benefits from these projects.

He asked all MLAs to keep a close watch on the execution of development works and coordinate with district officials to ensure timely completion. The chief minister also stressed the need for regular monitoring so that projects are implemented in a transparent and efficient manner.

In a first, the state government has also invited proposals from members of the Legislative Council. Officials said the step is aimed at expanding participation in development planning and ensuring that issues raised by MLCs also translate into concrete projects on the ground.

The meeting was attended by divisional commissioners, district magistrates and chief development officers from across the state. Officials said the administrative machinery has been asked to process the proposals quickly so that approved projects can begin without delay.

BJP lawmaker Vijay Bahadur Pathak welcomed the move, saying it would help accelerate development work in different parts of the state. “When elected representatives are directly involved in identifying projects according to local needs, it ensures faster implementation and better outcomes. This initiative will speed up development in many constituencies,” he said.

A Samajwadi Party legislator, however, said the government should ensure that proposals sent by opposition MLAs are also given equal importance. “Development work should not be seen through a political lens. Officials must ensure that proposals from opposition legislators are examined fairly and implemented if they benefit the public,” the SP leader said.

Political analyst Manoj Bhadra said the decision could strengthen local level development planning if implemented effectively. “Allowing legislators to suggest projects based on ground realities can make development more targeted. At the same time, the administration must ensure transparency and equal treatment of proposals from both ruling party and opposition representatives,” he said.

Government sources said the move is expected to strengthen coordination between elected representatives and the administration while accelerating local infrastructure development across Uttar Pradesh.
