The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday conducted searches at the office of political consultancy firm I-PAC and the home of its director Pratik Jain in Kolkata as part of a money laundering probe into an alleged multi-crore rupee coal pilferage scam.

According to PTI, the I-PAC's office in Salt Lake and Jain's house on Loudon Street are among about 10 premises, including four in New Delhi, being raided by the federal probe agency in the presence of central paramilitary teams since 7 am.

Who is Pratik Jain?

Pratik Jain is the co-founder and director of Indian Political Action Committee (iPAC), one of India’s most influential political consultancy organisations.

Jain, who is an alumnus of IIT Bombay, is known for working behind the scenes on election strategy, data analysis, and governance outreach programmes.

I-PAC has advised several major political parties and governments across India, including the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. Jain is also the IT cell head of TMC.

According to reports, I-PAC works closely with Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and his office. The consultancy is believed to play a key role in candidate selection during Assembly elections and remains actively involved throughout the campaign process.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the ED was attempting to seize TMC’s hard disks, internal documents and sensitive organisational data. She said, “They have raided the residence of our IT chief. They were confiscating my party’s documents and hard disks, which has details about our candidates for the assembly polls. I have brought those back,” Banerjee told reporters.

She also attacked Union Home Minister Amit Shah, calling him a “nasty Home Minister” and alleging that central agencies were being misused.

“He cannot even protect the country. Enforcement agencies and the Home Ministry have failed to safeguard democratic institutions. On one hand, voters’ names are being deleted; on the other, there are attempts to illegally collect sensitive data,” Banerjee said.

According to her,  the raids were ordered to access Trinamool's election strategy, candidate lists for the 2026 elections and confidential party documents.
