In a case of alleged medical negligence and quackery, Ambedkar Nagar police have arrested two unqualified men for allegedly performing a caesarean section at an illegal private hospital that resulted in the death of a 28-year-old woman.
The accused, Yogesh Verma (32), an arts graduate from Malipur, and Shubham Vishwakarma (19), a Class 12 student from Sultanpur, were arrested for allegedly conducting surgeries at Navjeevan Hospital in the Baskhari area without any recognised medical degree or surgical qualification.
According to police, Priyanka, wife of Sandeep Kumar Verma, was admitted to the hospital on February 5 for childbirth. The two accused allegedly performed a C-section, following which she delivered a baby girl.
Soon after the procedure, Priyanka developed excessive bleeding and failed to regain consciousness after anaesthesia. As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to a hospital in Akbarpur and later to Lucknow, but died on the way, officials said.
Her death has sparked protests by family members. The hospital operator, identified as Ruby, fled the premises and has been absconding. Police said mobile phones and other materials linked to the case have been seized, and efforts are on to trace her.
A joint inspection carried out on February 8 by the Baskhari Community Health Centre (CHC) superintendent, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Tanda and local police found that Navjeevan Hospital had been operating illegally for nearly five years.
As per officials, the facility was running from four rooms in a residential building without registration, biomedical waste authorisation, fire safety clearance, or qualified medical staff.
"No registration certificate or authorised signboard was found at the site. Medicines, surgical instruments and other equipment were recovered. The premises were sealed after preparing an inventory in the presence of the SDM and police," said Dr. Ajay Kumar, CHC superintendent.
An FIR was registered on February 9 on the complaint of the CHC superintendent under relevant sections related to illegal medical practice and negligence. Separately, Priyanka’s husband has filed a case under BNS Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
Baskhari SHO Sunil Kumar Pandey said Yogesh Verma did not possess any formal medical qualification. "He is only a graduate. His father was a ward boy at CHC Jalalpur, and he learned basic medical procedures while assisting him. He had reportedly been performing surgeries for several years," Pandey stated.
Police said Shubham Vishwakarma was associated with a nursing home in the Akhandnagar area of Sultanpur district and claimed he learned by observing procedures at a local hospital after completing Class 12.
Investigating officials suspect the duo charged between Rs 3,000 and Rs 5,000 per caesarean operation, far below standard rates, drawing poor patients seeking cheaper treatment.
Ambedkar Nagar Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sanjay Kumar Shaiwal has ordered verification of all medical credentials linked to the hospital and warned of strict action against illegal healthcare establishments.
Amid concerns over maternal deaths in the district, District Magistrate Anupam Shukla has also formed a committee to review maternal mortality cases reported since April 2025. Officials said those found guilty of negligence will face action.
Police said the investigation is ongoing to determine whether the accused carried out similar procedures at other facilities.
