'Uncouth': Why BJP is reminding Stalin of DMK leaders' controversial remarks on Biharis

Stalin, himself in 2017, said the northern states had failed to create adequate opportunities for their youth, forcing them to migrate in large numbers to states such as Tamil Nadu for manual labour.

The BJP has also dared Stalin to repeat the comments on Biharis by Maran and Udhayanidhi if he has the 'guts'.

Ahead of MK Stalin’s visit to Bihar, Tamil Nadu’s former BJP chief  K Annamalai on Wednesday shared a collection of video clips and posts from his personal X handle showing the chief minister and his party leaders mocking people of the state.

Stalin joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar. Apart from Stalin, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) parliamentary party leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi is also scheduled to join the yatra .

Taking a dig at the chief minister, Annamalai said: “Hope he takes the stage with Thiru @RahulGandhi avl and proudly repeats every one of those insults in front of the very people he and his party members mocked."

Gandhi launched the 16-day yatra from Sasaram on August 17, with the stated objective of highlighting alleged irregularities in the ongoing voter list revision exercise in Bihar.

Stalin’s visit comes after he recently came down heavily on the central government in the three-language row, claiming that forced adoption of Hindi language has "swallowed" 25 north Indian languages over the years. He had also said that  Bihar, where Hindi is predominant, symbolises the perceived linguistic and cultural imposition from the North.

DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran once alleged that the Hindi speakers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar who come to Tamil Nadu do menial jobs like construction work and cleaning of toilets.

In 2021, former DMK president M Karunanidhi had made controversial remarks about the migration of people from UP and Bihar to Tamil Nadu in 2010, saying they “lack culture" and were responsible for bringing about a “cultural invasion" in the state.

Stalin, himself in 2017, said the northern states had failed to create adequate opportunities for their youth, forcing them to migrate in large numbers to states such as Tamil Nadu for manual labour.

Tamil Nadu’s deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin once accused migrant workers of leaving the state during the lockdown and returning to their home states. He suggested that it was a sign of their weakness and lack of commitment to their jobs in Tamil Nadu.

The BJP has also dared Stalin to repeat the comments on Biharis by Maran and Udhayanidhi if he has the "guts”.

"I challenge Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who is going to Bihar: If you have the courage, can you speak there about your son Udhayanidhi's statement that 'Sanatana Dharma must be destroyed'? Furthermore, can you boldly repeat the statement made by your relative and DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran that Biharis clean toilets in Tamil Nadu?" BJP's state spokesperson in Tamil Nadu, Narayanan Tirupathi, said in an online post.
