At least two people were killed in violent unrest in Assam’s Kokrajhar district after a mob attack on a group of men suspected of cattle theft, triggering widespread protests, arson and severe disruption to normal life, reported CNN-News18

The situation remains tense, with authorities deploying heavy security forces and suspending mobile internet services to prevent further escalation.

Police said the incident began late Monday night when five men linked to an ongoing road construction project were returning after inspecting a work site in the Aoudang area. While travelling along the Gouri Nagar–Mashing Road, local villagers allegedly tried to stop their vehicle on suspicion of cattle lifting.

During the confrontation, the vehicle skidded off the road, and the occupants were allegedly attacked by the mob, which also set the vehicle on fire. All five men suffered severe burn injuries and were rushed to the hospital.

One of them, Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit alias Raja, succumbed to his injuries. He was the son-in-law of contractor Moranda Basumatary, associated with the road construction project. Another injured man, Sunil Murmu, later died during treatment, taking the death toll to two.

The other victims, identified as Prabhat Brahma, Jubiraj Brahma and Mahesh Murmu, remain hospitalised at Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital. Doctors said the condition of Prabhat Brahma continues to be critical.

Following the killings, public anger spilled onto the Karigaon stretch of the National Highway, where hundreds of protesters blocked traffic, burnt tyres and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible. As tensions escalated, mobs allegedly torched two temporary camps of the Birsa Commando Force and vandalised several properties, including the Sidu Kanhu Bhawan. Multiple shops were also set on fire.

Police, along with fire and emergency services personnel, were deployed in large numbers and brought the immediate situation under control. Officials said a few people have been detained for questioning and an investigation is underway.
