A Turkish Airlines aircraft, enroute to Istanbul from Kathmandu, made a full emergency landing at Kolkata airport on Wednesday after the captain reported a possible fire in the right engine, according to a report by ANI.
The aircraft safely landed at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBIA) at 14:49 hours with 236 people on board.
"The Turkish Airlines with flight number 'THY-727' caught fire within four minutes of the take off, the right engine caught fire. The flight took off at 1:28 pm (local time)," Teknath Sitaula, general manager of Tribhuvan International Airport told ANI.
As per the official, the pilots diverted the aircraft west of Kathmandu and shut down the right engine, holding the aircraft for about 10 minutes.
The official said the Turkish Airlines A330-303 wide-body aircraft was carrying 225 passengers. The Kathmandu Post reported that there were also 11 crew members on board, taking the total to 236.
Immediately after the reported engine fire, Tribhuvan International Airport was reportedly closed for about 15 minutes.
The airport director of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata, said a Turkish Airlines Boeing 727 operating from Kathmandu to Istanbul made a full emergency landing after the captain alerted Kolkata ATC to a possible fire in the right engine.
The aircraft landed at 14:49 hours with 236 passengers on board. An inspection is currently underway.
