Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on February 27 said three more semiconductor manufacturing plants will begin commercial production in India later this year, following the inauguration of the Micron facility.
“In 2026, we are starting commercial production at Micron. After that, two more commercial productions will happen in quick succession, and the fourth one will start around November or December,” Vaishnaw said.
The government has approved 4 major semiconductor facilities — Micron, CG Semi, Kaynes Semicon and Tata Electronics, Assam (apart from Tata Electronics’ large scale fab inDholera, Gujarat).
Vaishnaw said three additional plants (Kaynes Semicon, CG Semi, Tata Electronics) have already entered pilot production and their products are currently undergoing customer qualification.
He also referred to the recently launched joint venture display driver chip plant by Foxconn and HCL in Uttar Pradesh, which will manufacture chips used in screens across televisions, medical devices and industrial equipment.
“These plants will be meeting a substantial part of their global demand from India,” he said.
The minister said India’s semiconductor strategy was designed as a long-term programme focused on building a full ecosystem.
“We are used to measuring in parts per million. Here, parts per billion is the norm,” he said, referring to the precision required in chip fabrication.
