The controversy surrounding a robotic dog showcased at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 has taken a new turn, with Professor Neha Singh’s LinkedIn profile no longer accessible. Attempts to access her page now lead to a screen stating, “This page doesn’t exist,” along with a 404 error code, which typically indicates deleted or unavailable online content.
Professor Singh and Galgotias University came under scrutiny after a video from the summit showed her presenting a robotic quadruped named Orion as a student-developed innovation. Introducing the machine at the university’s Centre of Excellence stall, she said, “This is Orion. This has been developed at the Centre of Excellence at Galgotias University.” She further described the robot as capable of surveillance and monitoring functions and said it could move independently across the campus.
Soon after the clip circulated online, social media users identified the robot as a commercially available model manufactured by Unitree Robotics. The revelation triggered widespread criticism and escalated into a larger controversy. Authorities subsequently directed the university to vacate its stall at Bharat Mandapam, terming the episode a “national embarrassment”.
A day after the incident drew headlines, Professor Singh expressed regret over the episode. She maintained that the issue arose from miscommunication rather than deliberate misrepresentation. Speaking to HT, she said, “I could have been more eloquent. I could have been more articulate. Because of the euphoria and rush, things went a little hither-thither, which was never the intention. The branding has not been changed.”
The university, meanwhile, issued multiple clarifications distancing itself from claims that the robot was indigenously developed. In an official statement, it said the device had been procured from Unitree as part of its AI investments. “Galgotias has not built this robodog, neither have we claimed,” the statement said. “But what we are building are minds that will soon design, engineer, and manufacture such technologies right here in Bharat.”
In a subsequent apology, the institution attributed the controversy to internal miscommunication. “We at Galgotias University, wish to apologise profusely for the confusion created at the recent Al Summit. One of our representatives, manning the pavilion, was ill-informed. She was not aware of the technical origins of the product and in her enthusiasm of being on camera, gave factually incorrect information even though she was not authorised to speak to the press. Understanding the organisers sentiment we have vacated the premises,” the university said.
Earlier, the university had clarified that Professor Singh had not been suspended and that an inquiry into the matter remains underway.
