Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) on February 17 inaugurated India’s first private-sector helicopter final assembly line (FAL) for the Airbus H125 at Vemagal in Karnataka, marking a significant step in domestic rotary-wing manufacturing.

The facility was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and France’s Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin were present at the Vemagal facility, along with Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu and senior executives from Tata and Airbus.

Investment, jobs and output plans

Addressing the gathering, Singh said the investment in the H125 programme is expected to exceed Rs 1,000 crore and generate direct and indirect employment.

Calling the project a “shining example” of industrial partnership with friendly countries, he said it reflects India’s push for self-reliance in high-end manufacturing under the Make in India initiative.

Karnataka’s Large and Medium Industries Minister MB Patil said the facility is expected to manufacture up to 500 H125 helicopters over the next 20 years. Initially, the plant will produce around 10 helicopters annually, with plans to scale up over time.

The state government allotted 17 acres for the project, which was completed in about 18 months, according to Patil. Karnataka secured the project amid competition from other states, he added.

Capabilities and military potential

The H125 is a single-engine light utility helicopter used for civil and para-public missions such as emergency medical services, disaster management, law enforcement and connectivity in remote areas. It is also being positioned for potential military applications through the H125M variant.

Airbus Helicopters CEO Bruno Even said the facility would allow production of both civil and, if required, military variants with a higher degree of localisation. The first “Made in India” H125 is expected to be delivered in early 2027.

The H125 is part of the Écureuil family and is among the world’s best-selling single-engine helicopters. It is also the only helicopter to have landed on the summit of Mount Everest, underscoring its high-altitude performance - a feature relevant to Indian operating conditions.

Private sector’s rising role in defence

Singh said recent reforms - including the corporatisation of ordnance factories and the creation of defence industrial corridors - have increased private sector participation in defence manufacturing. He said that the private sector now accounts for nearly a quarter of India’s total defence production.

Defence exports have also grown significantly in recent years, he said, adding that more than 16,000 MSMEs are now part of the defence industrial ecosystem, with several foreign companies sourcing components from Indian suppliers.

TASL CEO and MD Sukaran Singh said the Vemagal facility would initially build helicopters without firm government or defence orders but would be ready to supply armed forces if required.

Building an aerospace ecosystem

The H125 assembly line is the second major industrial collaboration between Tata and Airbus in India after the C-295 military transport aircraft programme in Vadodara.

Civil Aviation Minister Naidu said India has emerged as the world’s third-largest civil aviation market over the past decade and has the potential to become a rotary-wing manufacturing hub for South Asia.

Airbus now sources components and services worth over $1.5 billion annually from India, including aerostructures and systems, reflecting the country’s growing role in the company’s global supply chain.
