Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan will be making his entry into Rajya Sabha in Tamil Nadu, after the ruling DMK allotted one seat for his party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM).

A resolution confirming Haasan's nomination to the Upper House of Parliament has already been passed by MNM. The actor entered politics in 2018.

Meanwhile, DMK formally announced its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections on Tuesday. The three candidates that DMK has announced are - senior advocate P Wilson, poet and writer Salma and former minister SR Sivalingam.

Earlier, during the 2024 elections, the MNM had backed the DMK-Congress alliance in Tamil Nadu. The alliance had swept all 39 parliamentary seats in the state. According to media reports, DMK party head MK Stalin promised Kamal Haasan a Rajya Sabha seat after his support to the party.

The election to fill the vacant Rajya Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu will be held on June 19.

An NDTV report said that Tamil Nadu Minister PK Sekar Babu met Kamal Haasan at his residence on Wednesday to confirm MK Stalin's support to the actor. MNM spokesperson Murali Appas had also confirmed to the media that Haasan's party will receive a Rajya Sabha seat but had added that Kamal Haasan would decide on the candidate.

Later, the MNM leadership passed a resolution, naming Haasan as its Rajya Sabha face for the allotted seat.
