Rs 36,950 crore for tunnel roads and elevated corridors in Bengaluru: DK Shivakumar meets PM Modi and seeks funds

Two urban tunnels and two elevated corridors to decongest Bengaluru will cost Rs 36,950 crore, said Karnataka deputy CM DK Shivakumar on July 31.

At a meeting with PM Narendra Modi, Shivakumar, who holds the Bengaluru development portfolio, said: "Feasibility studies have indicated that the construction of two urban tunnels and two elevated corridors is necessary for decongesting Bengaluru city. These projects can be implemented using annual budget allocations for decongesting erstwhile National Highways."

He said feasibility studies have shown that urban tunnels are the most effective solution for connecting National Highway-7 from Hosur to Bellary Road and KR Pura to Mysuru Road. "This approach minimises traffic disruptions at ground level and reduces the cost of land acquisition."

"We request your kind support to take up this project by allocating requisite funds to the Karnataka government from the central budget," he said.

Shivakumar said Bengaluru city is growing very fast in all directions. "We have identified five corridors as extensions to the existing Metro lines covering a length of 129 km. These corridors will connect the peripheral areas and satellite towns of Bengaluru and cater to the increasing demand for public transport."

He also urged the Union government to approve the integration of Metro and Road flyovers in upcoming Metro projects (double-decker) in Bengaluru.

Shivakumar also sought approval for the Rs 27,000 crore Peripheral Ring Road (Rs 21,000 crore for land acquisition and Rs 6,000 crore for civil construction costs). The 73 km eight-lane PRR on a PPP basis is being implemented by Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).

The Deputy CM also sought Union government approval for a Rs 3,000 crore World Bank-funded project to tackle flooding in Bengaluru.
