CJ Roy (57), chairman of Confident Group, a Bengaluru-based real estate firm with operations in India and overseas, died by suicide on January 30.
According to officials, the incident took place on Langford Road near Richmond Circle in Central Bengaluru while Income Tax officials were present at the premises on Friday afternoon. Roy allegedly shot himself with a revolver and sustained critical injuries. He was rushed to Narayana Hospital in HSR Layout, where he was declared brought dead.
Sources said the incident occurred amid ongoing Income Tax raids on the businessman, with officials conducting document checks at his office. IT officials halted the raid after seizing documents and left the premises.
Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh told reporters: "An incident occurred today within the limits of Ashok Nagar police station, in which Confident Group chairman allegedly shot himself. Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams are conducting an inquiry. The injured person was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead".
"Income Tax department had been searching the premises for the last two to three days. We are not aware of all the details. A team from Kerala had also come. Police are in touch with the family members, who are currently not in India and are expected to arrive by flight today. At present, it is being treated as a case of self-inflicted gunshot injury. As per preliminary information, Income Tax raids have been underway for the past two days, and similar raids had taken place earlier as well. We are yet to receive full details and will share more information once available" he adds.
Police have registered a case and are examining the circumstances leading to the incident. Officials said statements from witnesses and IT officials present at the scene are being recorded.
Founded in 2005, Confident Group is a leading real estate and infrastructure developer with residential, commercial and mixed-use projects across Karnataka and other parts of India. Over two decades, it built a strong footprint in the mid-segment and premium housing markets, with Roy known as a hands-on entrepreneur who guided its growth and operations. Roy, a native of Kochi in Kerala, had gained public visibility in recent years through sponsorships and cash prize distributions on popular television programmes.
