Qatar frees eight ex-Navy veterans jailed on espionage charges

The individuals from India, employed by the private company Al Dahra, were apprehended in August 2022, on suspicion of espionage.

In the early hours of February 12, the Ministry of External Affairs released a statement, expressing gratitude to the state of Qatar for the release of the eight Indian nationals.

India has achieved a significant diplomatic milestone as eight ex-Indian Navy personnel, initially facing death sentences in Qatar, have now been granted release. The Central government, on February 12, expressed gratitude for the release of eight Indian nationals employed by Dahra Global, who were previously detained in Qatar, according to a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs.

"The Government of India welcomes the release of eight Indian nationals working for the Dahra Global company who were detained in Qatar," the ministry noted in its statement.

Seven of them have already returned to India, noted the MEA statement. The ministry commended the Amir of the State of Qatar for facilitating the release and repatriation of these individuals.

One of the veterans expressed gratitude, stating, "Our presence here is a result of PM Modi's intervention and the consistent efforts of the Government of India," in an interaction with ANI.

Another Navy veteran, back home after an 18-month wait, conveyed deep appreciation, saying, "Our return wouldn't have been possible without PM Modi's personal involvement and his diplomatic ties with Qatar. Our heartfelt thanks go to the Government of India for their unwavering efforts; this day is a testament to their dedication."

"Seven out of the eight of them have returned to India. We appreciate the decision by the Amir of the State of Qatar to enable the release and home-coming of these nationals," further stated the MEA.

The individuals from India, employed by the private company Al Dahra, were apprehended in August 2022, on suspicion of espionage. The accusations against the Indian nationals were not disclosed publicly by either the Qatari authorities or New Delhi.
